About Drum Doctor
Set-up by Phil Gilbert who has been playing drums for over forty years. He buys and sells drums and cymbals as a 'hobby' and his experience as a technician in school led him to create Drum Doctor.
"I introduced myself to the Head of music after a while, realising that she had no technical support whatsoever. I was first tasked with bringing back to life the Roland kit that had bits missing and broken. Having then seen the state of the drum kits in practice rooms, I found ways of raising funds to bring them back up to scratch."
He was asked if he could fix some broken djembe drums.
"I don't think I had ever picked one up before that point. When I did finally get around to trying, it wasn't pretty. The second one was much better and I gradually became proficient in the art. The goatskin heads have to be soaked until they are pliable before attaching them to the drum. Seven metres of rope are required for one medium-size drum. It has to be threaded through every loop of the top and bottom rings before being tensioned and tied-off."
